Seamless Electronic Beamforming Satellite Communications Resilient to Propeller Blockage

Global Konet (GK), a leading South Korean enterprise specializing in satellite communication antennas, announced that it unveiled its next-generation aviation electronic beamforming satellite communication solutions at the recently held Korea Ocean Expo.


During the exhibition, GK showcased a range of innovations, including an aviation Electronically Steered Antenna (ESA) developed through defense R&D, helicopter satellite communication solutions, electronic beamforming antennas for drones, and long-range datalink communication solutions. The company drew significant attention for demonstrating technology capable of maintaining stable connectivity even in environments where satellite signals are obstructed by the propeller (main rotor) blades—historically the most significant communication hurdle for rotary-wing aircraft.


Standard helicopter satellite communication systems frequently suffer from momentary signal attenuation and link disconnection as the rotating blades repeatedly block the path to the satellite. These interruptions have long posed major operational constraints in environments demanding real-time data transmission, such as ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) missions, disaster response operations, and military command and control (C2).


At the expo, GK introduced a novel aviation satellite communication solution that integrates specialized satellite modem technology with advanced electronic beam-steering capabilities. This technology is meticulously engineered to sustain communication quality despite the signal masking caused by rotor blades, ensuring stable, broadband satellite services even for helicopters engaged in high-speed maneuvers.


This breakthrough facilitates not only the execution of ISR missions but also enables real-time high-definition video transmission, data collection, remote command and control, and situational awareness sharing in BLOS (Beyond Line of Sight) environments. The technology is highly regarded for its broad applicability in border and maritime surveillance, wildfire response, disaster rescue, military reconnaissance, and tactical communications.


Beyond manned aviation platforms, GK also revealed an electronic beamforming antenna tailored for drone operations. This capability enables the establishment of robust, satellite-based communication networks for long-range drone flights, showcasing technological prowess that will drive future unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) ISR missions and advanced long-range surveillance systems.


Furthermore, GK exhibited an integrated network solution that fuses satellite communications with Line of Sight (LOS) datalink technology. This hybrid solution provides LOS communications up to a 100km range and supports seamless, real-time data sharing across aircraft, helicopters, UAVs, ground vehicles, and maritime platforms.


By implementing a smart hybrid network architecture—which utilizes the cost-effective LOS datalink under normal conditions and automatically seamlessly switches to satellite communications when operations extend beyond the visual line of sight—the system simultaneously achieves significant operational cost reductions and uncompromising communication reliability.


Throughout the exhibition, representatives from domestic and international defense contractors, aviation platform operators, and public safety agencies intensely reviewed the system's applicability for both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. Discussions were actively held regarding Proof of Concept (POC) initiatives to verify performance in real-world environments. Validating the technology's commercial viability, several agencies moved forward to schedule follow-up technical meetings and live demonstrations.


"This year's Korea Ocean Expo served as a pivotal opportunity to introduce GK's aviation electronic beamforming satellite communication technology to both domestic and global markets," stated a Global Konet representative. "We received overwhelming interest, particularly regarding our aviation satellite communication technology capable of maintaining stable links despite propeller blade obstruction, as well as our 100km LOS datalink solution."


The representative added, "Moving forward, we plan to develop a Multi-Orbit ESA platform supporting Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), and Geostationary Equatorial Orbit (GEO) networks. By combining this with AI-based integrated communication control technology, our ultimate goal is to build a next-generation, unified communication ecosystem connecting aerospace, maritime, ground, and drone platforms."
